Seaside, together we celebrate the fifth year of our STARS Summer Literacy and Enrichment Program which begins Monday, June 25th and closes at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 3rd.
STARS is a six-week summer literacy and enrichment program offered to those rising second and third grade students who read below grade level at the end of the current school year. Statistics show that children, unless they have experiences and opportunities during the summer to maintain their reading skills, quickly lose what they’ve learned in the prior year, and begin the next school year further behind.
This is where STARS and YOU have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these children. And this year we need you more than ever.
Through the support of The Duke Endowment, this year Seaside will expand to four classes serving 36 children and welcome both teachers and students from Union Elementary School for the first time, and welcome back teachers and students from Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary.
Now it is even easier to volunteer. Click here to register on-line. You will receive an email that your registration has been completed. You can then view the entire STARS daily calendar, click on the day that you would like to serve and choose the activities that interest you the most or are still in need of help. Following are the ways in which you can make a difference in a child’s life this summer:
Morning Bus Driver (Mini-bus or van): No special license is needed. Pick up students that, without the help of church transportation, would not be able to attend the program.
Morning Bus Driver (CDL License with Passenger Designation): Drive the larger church bus for pick up.
Afternoon Bus Driver (Mini-bus, CDL Bus or Van): Take children home at 4:00 PM Dismissal
Morning and/or Evening Bus Chaperone: Ride the bus with the driver to help load/unload children.
Morning Sign In and Breakfast: Check in and assist the children that are car riders. Church opens at 8:00 AM with breakfast at 8:30 AM. Help serve breakfast, assist children as needed, spend time with the children until 9:00 AM when they go to class. Clean up as needed.
Lunch: Children are dismissed from class at noon and ready for lunch. Duties are the same as breakfast.
